Working at one of the “Big Four” accounting firms is a goal that many accounting students aspire to. Made up of Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC, this powerful group of firms handles audits for the majority of publicly traded companies and a long list of private ones. To be considered for their highly competitive interview processes you should start preparing early on in your accounting studies.
Always Be Networking
The Big Four accounting firms want to meet with interested students during freshman or sophomore year, and they’re actively sending recruiters to campuses to pursue those who are serious about careers in accounting. Take every opportunity to network with these recruiters as soon as possible. Ask as many questions as you can about what the firms are looking for in candidates, what the company culture is like and how interviews are conducted. Also consider attending career fairs to make additional connections with influential people in the financial realm.
Look for Internships
An internship at one of the Big Four firms can mean the difference between getting a foot in the door and having the door opened wide for you. Keep an eye out for opportunities during the fall recruiting sessions that these companies hold. This offers you the best chance of landing an internship that will teach you what it’s like to work at a large firm and what would be expected of you in a full-time position. You’ll also get a chance to meet more people and expand your network.
Make Your Application Exceptional
Whether or not you get an internship, you need to make yourself stand out in order to be interviewed for a paid position. Tailor your cover letter and resume to the job you’re applying for so that they highlight the best of what you can offer. Show the firm that you have skills, credentials, affiliations or professional experience that other applicants don’t have. Proofread everything yourself, and have someone else proofread all of it a second time. Your application must be error-free and professional to make the best impression.
Prepare for the Interview in Advance
The Big Four conduct several rounds of interviews, and only those who present themselves well in the first round get a chance to move on. Dress the way you would as if you were going to work, even if it means buying something specifically for the interview.
